Gluck’s rarely performed opera/vaudeville is both witty comedy and social satire. Two Average Joes find themselves in a curious paradise where their every desire seems to be instantly fulfilled, but not without a price. The idealized fantasy of this sort of perfect society has engaged the imaginations of artists, philosophers and thinkers through the ages, but the word “utopia”, first coined by Thomas More, actually means “nowhere.” Our Merlin and his nowhere were inspired by images of Kim Jung Il’s North Korea and L. Ron Hubbard’s Scientology, two inherently unsettling modern attempts at getting it right just one more time.
