Does Carmen have to be a French-speaking, yet somehow Spanish gypsygirl trapped inside a very French grand opera? Maybe she’s better understood as an employee of a limousine service in lower Manhattan, who is stalked by a slightly creepy front door security guard named Don Jose. This is a place where Carmen is forbidden to smoke and made to make Xerox copies night and day, where the relationship with Don Jose is one of projection, one that works only when it stays within the confines of the security camera.
